CDO announces "common sense" changes to dental SOPs in England

16 July 2021

The Chief Dental Officer for England, Sara Hurley, has published a set of "common sense changes" to the dental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The CDO has stated that there will be consideration of "what further changes can be made and when the SOP can be withdrawn".

The CDO's latest update notes that the current IPC guidance for dentistry remains applicable and "should continue to be followed in full, for the safety of everyone, while it remains in place. Staff, patients and visitors are expected to continue to follow social distancing rules when visiting any care setting as well as using face coverings, masks and other personal protection equipment."

As such, the changes to the SOPs published today mainly serve to reinforce existing messaging and signpost to IPC guidance. The CDO's update also highlights that "clinical prioritisation must continue, as detailed in the SOP, and this includes actively reaching out to high needs dental patients and vulnerable groups most at risk of avoidable dental disease. "

The updated document can be downloaded below, with the latest set of changes highlighted.
